Wayne County Schools and Solar Holler, a West Virginia solar installer and developer, are collaborating on an apprentice program for qualifying senior high school students to prepare them to work in the renewable energy sector. The program offers students hands-on experience in solar technology and electrical work, under the supervision and guidance of Solar Holler’s unionized installation workers. Students shadow workers, learn about measuring and laying out solar panels on roofs, connecting panel wiring, ensuring panels are watertight and other important tasks. The apprenticeship program is an expansion of Wayne High School’s Pioneer Career Launch Program. According to Wayne County Superintendent Todd Alexander, “Transitioning to solar power resonates beyond economics—it’s a commitment to nurturing our students and community. By redirecting savings towards our schools, we’re investing in educational excellence and a brighter tomorrow for our children and West Virginia as a whole.”
