The Coalfield Solar Fund

The Coalfield Solar Fund offers grant opportunities to K-12 public schools and community colleges in the coalfield regions of West Virginia and Virginia to install solar energy systems. These competitive grants offer up to $150,000 over a three-year period and will be awarded based on the size of the solar project. The funds are provided by the company, Intuit ,and conducted in partnership with Secure Solar Futures and The National Energy Education Development project (NEED). NEED is a nonprofit group that advances energy literacy across the United States. Secure Solar Futures installs the solar systems, operates the Power Purchase Agreements and develops workforce-related programs. The grant program seeks to advance access to renewable energy, create new career opportunities for coalfield communities, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Fund launched in March 2023. The first West Virginia recipient is Calhoun County Schools.
