Sheperd University Library Solar Installation

The Shepherd University Scarborough Library’s 189 solar panel installation was the largest among West Virginia nonprofit organizations at the time of its installation in 2019. The panels generate approximately 60 kilowatts of power per year, enough to run five or six homes. The university expects to enjoy a huge savings, roughly $120,000 over the lifetime of the system. The project was funded by a $100,000 grant from EBSCO Information Services of Ipswich, Massachusetts. The panels were installed by Solar Holler.  According to Dr. Laura Renninger, dean of the Ruth Scarborough Library, “it’s really important to be good stewards of our earth and natural resources. I am excited about what our students and the community will learn from observing these panels, and I hope it will inspire others from the university and community to seek out funding so they can do the same with their buildings.” The library array is one of three solar arrays at the university, which also includes one array at the Shepherd University Agricultural Innovation Center (Tabler Farm) and one array behind the Robert C. Byrd Science and Technology Center.
