Ohio County Schools Energy Upgrades

Energy upgrades for thirteen facilities (almost 1 million square feet of building space) in the Ohio County School District, Wheeling, WV, guarantees energy savings over the next 15 years. The School District’s performance contracting project with the engineering firm CMTA included full geothermal HVAC renovations for two schools, a new 400-ton magnetic-bearing chiller plant and 9 million BTU boiler plant for another school, along with other HVAC controls upgrades and retro-commissioning, low-flow plumbing fixtures and LED lighting retrofits across the district. Electric rate changes also serve to help reduce utility costs. The project was completed in 2023 with a guaranteed savings of $425,841 annually and actual savings of $648,218 annually. Two of the schools, Elm Grove and Middle Creek Elementary Schools, have a 100 Energy Star Rating, the highest of any building in West Virginia.
