New Solar Site in Rivesville, West Virginia, Generating Solar Energy

Construction is complete and operations are underway at Mon Power and Potomac Edison’s second utility-scale solar site in West Virginia as of October 2024. The companies are FirstEnergy Corp. subsidiaries. Approximately 14,000 solar panels are producing up to 5.5 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity, enough to power approximately 1,000 homes. The site is located on 27 acres of company-owned property in Rivesville WV (Marion County) on a former brownfield/coal ash disposal site of the Rivesville Power Station which was deactivated in 2012. The solar project is one of five the utility companies are developing in response to a “2020 bill passed by the West Virginia Legislature that authorizes electric utilities to own and operate up to 200 megawatts of solar generation facilities” including one at Fort Martin Power Plan in Maidsville, WV and one in Harpers Ferry in Berkeley County. FirstEnergy Corp. plans to seek approval to construct the additional two solar sites near Davis in Tucker County and Weirton in Hancock County.
