The League of Women Voters WV (LWVWV) is a “nonpartisan volunteer organization that promotes political responsibility through informed and active citizen participation in government.” While the League does not support or oppose candidates, it does support or oppose legislation based on serious study and agreement among its members. It also publishes an annual Legislative Scorecard tracking WV state legislators’ votes on certain bills. The LWVWV has three active local chapters: Morgantown-Monongalia, Jefferson County, and Huntington. Two of the websites mention climate change work. League of Women Voters of Jefferson County educates citizens and fosters dialogue on issues from healthcare and climate change to openness in government. League of Women Voters-WV: Morgantown-Monongalia’s Environmental Protection Program identifies climate change as a crisis that requires near-term responses. Its environmental priorities are to:
- “Support strategic management of natural resources to protect the planet and for this and future generations;
- Advocate for environmental priorities that are coupled with a creative and just transition for workers in fossil fuel industries;
- Advocate passage of nuisance legislation that would alleviate problems of industrial noise, medical waste or odor;
- Recognize, support, and advocate with other organization to promote our environmental protection priorities. Ensure that new technologies, such as carbon sequestration, are fully understood by the public.”
