An energy savings performance contract between Grant County Board of Education and the engineering firm CMTA resulted in energy upgrades to all four schools in the district. Upgrades were designed to address aging HVAC equipment and increase energy conservation measures at already energy-efficient schools, all within a limited renovation budget. In addition to new web-based HVAC control systems, LED lighting fixtures, and new plumbing fixtures in the schools, Petersburg Elementary School was outfitted with the largest net-metered solar array in the state of West Virginia, making it the state’s first Zero Energy School. The energy savings will fund the district’s project. The project was completed in 2024 and expects a guaranteed savings of $188,356 annually and an actual savings of $218,396 annually. In its first year, Petersburg Elementary’s electric utility cost was reduced from an annual cost of $99,000 to $2,500.
