Berkeley County Board of Education, in Martinsburg, WV, partnered with the consulting engineering firm CMTA to renovate 35 buildings in the district, including seven schools that received new geothermal HVAC systems. A key project goal was to achieve “enough energy efficiency to fully fund the project through guaranteed savings.” This energy system overhaul, completed in 2020, plans to achieve new levels of energy efficiency and establish Berkeley County as a sustainability leader in the state. The project was able to complete major renovations over the course of two summers. Project results include: energy use in schools using geothermal has been reduced by 75 percent; overall district energy use has been reduced by 43 percent; a savings of more than $1,300,000 was realized during the construction year and a projected guaranteed savings of $1.7 million is expected in future years. The Berkeley County School District is West Virginia’s second largest and fastest growing school system. According to Dr. William Queen, Chair, Berkeley County Schools Board of Education, “Hiring CMTA was one of the best things we have ever done as a school district.”
